Raising a Flag for Mike Honan

Raising a Flag for Mike Honan

A flag has been raised on Beach 116th Street, in honor of late U.S. Navy veteran Mike Honan. Flip Mullen of Legends in Valor noticed a lack of American flags on the median at Beach 116th Street, and after seeking help from the City and being told there wasn’t funding to put up a flag, he set out on a mission to purchase and put one up himself.

With the passing of Mike Honan on January 3, that mission became even more meaningful. A few weeks before his passing, Honan had thanked Mullen and his organization, Legends in Valor, for their efforts to place wreaths at Memorial Circle, and their contributions for the upkeep of the park. So on the day of Honan’s funeral on Thursday, January 8, Legends in Valor made a donation to Tunnel to Towers in honor of Mike Honan, and Mullen enlisted the help of U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, Howard Cienski, a two-time Purple Heart recipient, to help raise the flag on Beach 116th Street, on the median across from Rogers, in Honan’s name.
