Rockaway Honors Veterans & Remembers Flight 587

Next week, there are two memorial events taking place, including a ceremony for Veterans Day and the annual ceremony for the 24th anniversary of the crash of Flight 587.

Veterans Day

On Tuesday, November 11 at 11 a.m., in front of the Doughboy Monument on Beach 94th and Rockaway Beach Blvd., The Daniel M. O’Connell Post 272 of the Americans Legion will gather to conduct Veterans Day services. This service will honor all who answered their nation’s call to military service. All are welcome to attend to honor our veterans.

Flight 587

On Wednesday, November 12 at 9 a.m., all are welcome to join at the Flight 587 memorial on Beach 116th Street near the boardwalk to remember those who died in the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 in Rockaway, 24 years earlier on November 12, 2001. The names of the 260 people on board the flight and the five Rockaway neighbors who were killed on the ground (Helen and Thomas Concannon, Kathleen and Christopher Lawler and Frank Pompino), will be read, and flowers will be placed on the memorial. All are welcome to attend.
