The waves were low, but the sun was high on Sunday, September 8, for the 20th Annual Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic on Beach 91st Street.
Richie Allen was a local firefighter who died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. But he was also a lifeguard on the beach that’s now named after him, a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend to many, and he absolutely loved surfing. For the past 20 years, his family has continued that love with an annual surf contest for kids, now all born after 9/11 happened. But through the contest, they get to learn about Richie and what he sacrificed that day, and let his spirit live on through them.
As his brother Luke Allen told the young surfers before announcing the winners, “You guys coming here and turning out and bringing the good energy is what makes it special for us. So we really appreciate everyone coming.”
The beautiful day provided calm waves, making perfect conditions for the memorial paddle out later in the afternoon, but presented a challenge for the groms trying to hang ten. However, they rose to the occasion and many went home with cash prizes in their age categories. Winning top prize was Zion Allen Carbonell (Boys 10 and Under), Timmy LaFleur (Boys 11-13), Matt LaFroscia (Boys 14-16), Mara Brady (Girls 12 and Under) and Teagan O’Rourke (Girls 13-16). There were also prizes for second and third in each age category.
After the winners were announced, everyone grabbed their board and a red carnation to take out into the ocean, meeting an FDNY fire boat and holding a traditional paddle out circle, splashing water into the air in memory of Richie. Meanwhile, those on the beach, including some too young to pick up a surfboard yet, instead threw the red flowers into the waves in tribute.
The day, which included a DJ, t-shirt sales, food, drinks and a perfect day on the beach was made possible by the Allen family, Chris and Steve Stathis of Boarders, which sponsored the event, Jimmy Dowd, who printed the t-shirts, Mikey Weinstein and Jeff Anthony for judging the contest and more.
“This event is really the exclamation point of a summer for us and from my heart, my family’s hearts, this is an amazing day. Every year has gotten more special and its magic,” Luke Allen said. “It’s unbelievable the community coming together like this.”
