Ryan Rudden Hockey Tournament Set for Saturday

By Katie McFadden

Ryan Rudden will never be forgotten. On Saturday, October 5, Rockaway will remember the 17-year-old local resident who tragically died in a car accident in 2002, with his favorite sport—hockey. The 17th Annual Ryan Rudden Memorial Hockey Tournament takes place Saturday, with the first puck drop at 9 a.m. at the Beach 108th Hockey Rink near the boardwalk. While folks enjoy some competitive roller hockey, there will also be face painting at noon, DJ music starting at 2 p.m., food at 3:30 p.m., t-shirts for sale for $25, raffles and a 50/50 for $100 a ticket. All are welcome to come by and show their support.

This year, the Rudden family has officially launched the Ryan Rudden Foundation. “All proceeds from this year’s Ryan Rudden Memorial Hockey Tournament will directly support our mission to make a greater impact in the community. In the past, we’ve donated to families in need and supported other foundations, and now, with the establishment of our own foundation, we are committed to using these fundraising efforts to provide even more assistance to community members facing hardship. With your continued support, we look forward to expanding this important work on a larger scale,” Ryan’s sister, Rickielynne Rudden, said.

Last year’s tournament was rained out, but they were still able to raise $22,000 for the Chef Adrienne Guttieri Culinary Foundation, through the 50/50. In 2022, they raised nearly $40,000 for the Timmy Klein Foundation. This year’s honoree was set to be Jimmy Costin, a Rockaway Rockies regular, who set up a team in the Ryan Rudden Tournament every year. Costin was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, Costin died on September 23 and was laid to rest on Wednesday, October 2. Proceeds from the tournament will go to Costin’s family.

As we go to press, the 50/50 pot is up to $15,000 and growing. Tickets, $100 each, can be purchased in advance or at the tournament.

The hockey teams are set for the tournament, but those interested can reach out to Bobby Keane and Johnny Wagner on social media for the waitlist.
