On January 28, a girls varsity basketball game took place on this peninsula containing a lot of local DNA. Brooklyn’s Fontbonne Hall Academy of the CHSAA made the commute to Rockaway Beach to take on The Scholars’ Academy of the PSAL. Girls on both teams grew up together playing this game in Rockaway and it was fitting that they got to finally play each other at the high school level.
From the opening tip, the Lady Seawolves showed out and protected home court in convincing fashion. Halftime saw Scholars’ with a 29-18 lead and after three quarters it was Scholars’ ahead 42-27. Fontbonne Hall put together a nice little run in the fourth quarter to cut into the double-digit lead. When the final buzzer went off, it was The Scholars’ Academy defeating Fontbonne Hall with the final score being 53-46. This win improved The Scholars’ Academy record to 17-2 overall on the season.

Freshman Kate Tyminski of The Scholars’ Academy led all scorers with 19 points. She was joined by her backcourt teammate Meghan Burns who made multiple three-pointers finishing with 16 points. Junior Annabel Akhere contributed eight points to the victory.
Fontbonne Hall Academy was led in scoring by three Rockaway girls. Lucy Kuhlmann scored 16 points, Summer Duffy had 15 points, and Maryann Polanco finished with 10.
The Rockaways Times would also like to congratulate the five local Scholars’ Academy seniors who had their Senior Night on February 2. Best of luck the rest of the way this season and into college! Go Seawolves!
