Shamrocks for Seniors
Dear Editor:
I am writing to the Rockaway Times to congratulate, praise and thank the 94th Street Older Adult Center for the magnificent and splendid St. Patrick’s Day party they had on Friday, March 13. I felt proud and honored to be invited to play a few old Irish tunes during the luncheon. It was heartening that many of the 100 guests were not Irish and many were of different racial and ethnic origin but everyone joined in and sang along, clapping to the Irish rhythm like they just got off the boat from Ireland. It was a fine example why people should unite together during such times of political strife and never ending wars.
I must mention that the lunch was very wholesome and tasty, topped off with ice cream, Irish soda bread and guacamole fit for a king.
Then came the fashion show directed by Briege McGarrity. Contestants showed off their Irish caps and sweaters. Everyone was Irish at this point. Contestants lined up and marched in line around the floor to the tune of “I’ll tell my Ma when I go home, the boys won’t leave the girls alone.” Ah, sure, faith and begorra, it was a sight to see. Only Briege McGarrity could direct and execute such a spectacular show. Briege is the case manager at the center. The other members who made this party a resounding success are: Jurate Jones, Program Manager, Teresa Murgolo, Administrative Assistant, and Melba Romero, Kitchen Aide. The Seaside Older Adult Center is located at 320 Beach 94th Street. Tel #: 347-926-4119. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, serving breakfast and lunch. Come one, come all. Stop in and say hello and become a member where warmth, respect, kindness and compassion are the center’s theme.
