St. Camillus / St. Virgilius Basketball League Crowns Their Champions

By Bill Swensen

The St. Camillus / St. Virgilius basketball league ended another great year. According to the feedback received, all the kids had a lot of fun. This is a league that ensures that all the players on every team gets their fair share of playing time. As we all know, kids don’t have any fun sitting on the bench. In this league, we make sure that doesn’t happen. We ended the year, as always, with our Championship night. This was the culmination of a fantastic year. It was a great night. The crowds were large and loud, and you could feel the excitement in the gym. Congratulations to all the teams who made it into the finals. All the teams played with a lot of heart and determination. Every team fought until the final buzzer. It’s a shame anybody had to lose.

Special thanks need to go to several people. First of all, thank you to all the parents, grandparents, other relatives, and friends who came down each week to cheer on the kids. The games are definitely more fun when the players have people in the stands rooting for them. Thank you to all the coaches who volunteer their time. We were very lucky this year to get such a great group of coaches who understood their purpose and taught the kids how to play the game the right way. Thank you to the referees who always handled everything that happened on the court in a very professional way. Thank you to Father Rodriguez who enabled the program to continue and give it his full support. A special thank you to Ron Hooks who organizes all the referees and does whatever else is needed to help the program run smoothly.  Lastly, the biggest thank you goes to Calvin Stanley, who is there every week for about five hours on Wednesday and Thursday night when the games are played. Without him we would not be able to have such a special league.
One last thing. This year was dedicated to the memory of Monsignor Richard Ahlemeyer. He used to be at the gym every week because he really enjoyed watching the kids play. He was sincerely missed this year.

Well, that’s it for now. Hope to see you all again next year.!
