St. Camillus / St. Virgilius MVPs of the Week

By Bill Swensen
The St. Camillus/ St. Virgilius basketball program is underway with 150 local kids from 4th grade to 8th grade, playing in the Girls and Boys leagues. Here are some standout players this week.
Peter Brady
Junior Boys League
Peter is an all-around player. He rebounds, he plays tenacious defense, and most importantly, he scores in the clutch. He does everything his team needs to win. In this game, he led all scorers with 16 points. The key in this game wasn’t just his scoring, but when he scored. The game was close until the 4th quarter. That’s when Peter took over and poured in 9 of his 16 points, leading his team to a well-deserved 6-point victory.
LJ Santiago
Senior Boys League
LJ is a dynamo on the court. He’s fast and he is relentless. He has all the skills. His defense is phenomenal, he fights under the boards for rebounds, and these skills are only topped by his ability to score at will. He’ll outrun you on every fast break and when he plays in a half-court offense, he annihilates you from behind the arc. He knocked down five 3’s and led all scorers with 27 points. LJ did everything he could to help his team win, but they still came up just four points short.
Ruben Caminero
Senior Boys
League
Ruben is a powerhouse of a player. When he gets going, do not get in his way. This week, the Black team was missing their top scorer and somebody needed to step up. Ruben knew this and he stepped up big time. He is always a monster under the boards, but he knew that they needed more from him this week and he certainly delivered. He was the game’s top scorer with 22 points, and he spearheaded his short-handed team to a hard fought five-point victory.
