St. Camillus / St. Virgilius MVPs of the Week

St. Camillus / St. Virgilius MVPs of the Week

The St. Camillus/ St. Virgilius basketball program is underway with about 150 local kids from 4th grade to 8th grade, playing in the Girls and Boys leagues. Here are some standout players this week.

Dayanaralyz Torres

Girls League

Dayanaralyz is a very strong and determined player. She powers her way around the court and is almost impossible to stop. She’s one of those players who always seems to be in the right place at the right time. This week she was simply unstoppable in the paint. She was ripping down rebounds and scoring at will. Dayanaralyz ended up with a league-leading 28 points and led her team to an impressive 11-point victory.

Justin Youngberg

Junior Boys League

Justin is like a lightning bolt on the court. He’s so quick he simply leaves the defense in the dust. He’s so hard to defend because he can score from everywhere. He has the speed to drive past the defense, the soft touch to pull up for a short-range jumper, and the skill to knock down shots from behind the 3-point arc. He was really on his game this week, scoring a league-high 20 points and leading his team to a solid win.

Patrick Palmese

Senior Boys League

Patrick is one of the top players in the league. He can do everything on the court. He is the player who takes charge of the offense and orchestrates everything they do. He is a tireless player who plays intense defense and then immediately turns his energy to dominate the offense. This week was no different. He used his multiple skills to finish at the rim and to drill shots from all over the court. He scored a very impressive 32 points and led his team to runaway win.

One last point. We have dedicated this year to the memory of Jack Palmese. He was simply a great man, and a great coach who dedicated his life to improving the lives of the kids in Rockaway. A man who passed away much too soon. Patrick was Jack’s nephew. You can see in the picture that he made a special point of highlighting the “Coach Jack” that is written on his uniform and on all the uniforms of the players this year. This was a beautiful heartfelt gesture from this wonderful young man. We all miss you Jack, and we can never thank you enough.
