 Thanks and Curiosity

Dear Editor:

Local reporting is the backbone of our community and I appreciate all you do.

Following are two examples of the power of the local press. I’m hoping to hear your response to the second one.

I was especially inspired by the space you gave to Rockaway’s opportunity to have local representation in the judiciary by bi-partisan Jenny Tubridy. This is what needs to be highlighted:  our common fate and potential to shape our common destiny.

Speaking of which, I’ve been curious about the presence of Call-A-Head, “New York’s Largest Portable Sanitation Company.” They seem to be expanding on Broad Channel, at least their vehicles are expanding parking on Cross Bay Boulevard there.

Questions would you consider assigning a reporter to investigate: What is the current impact of Call-A-Head’s operations on the health and safety of our residences and people on Jamaica Bay and served by the municipal services of the area (water for residential use, water for recreational use, water for a balanced natural ecosystem on the fragile North American flyway)? What is the threshold of health and safety for residents, seasonal tourists, other living beings in the impact zone? Who is Call-A-Head reporting on the status of the impacts of their operations to? Who is keeping the public apprised of that status?

Thanks so much for all you do.

Elsie Maio
