The Airedale Terrier

By Terri Estes
The Airedale Terrier is the largest terrier breed. Their size, strength and agility make them among the most versatile dog breeds. Because of their large size, as well as an unwavering spirit, the Airedale is nicknamed “The King of Terriers.”
The breed originated in Yorkshire, England in the early 1800s. Bred by factory workers and sports enthusiasts to control the population of rats and otters, they were able to work on land and in the water. Because of their versatility, they eventually became popular as hunting dogs, retrievers, guard dogs and family pets.
The Airedale also played a significant role in World War I. Because of their intelligence and bravery, they were used as messenger dogs. They were trained to carry messages through trenches, delivering critical information to commanders and alerting troops of impending attacks. The British Red Cross used Airedales to find wounded soldiers on the battlefields and deliver first aid equipment to the trenches.
Airedales have a hard, wiry double coat with black and tan coloring. The head is long and flat with small triangular ears. The snout sports a distinctive beard and mustache. They usually weigh between 50-70 lbs., with the female being slightly smaller.
This breed is famous for its friendly and loyal nature. It is considered to be a great family dog that does well in active households. They do well with children and other dogs, especially if well socialized. This is an active dog that enjoys walks, jogs, swimming and other outdoor activities. So, if you are looking for a new jogging companion, this may be the breed for you.
