The Australian Shepherd Dog

 The Australian Shepherd Dog

The Australian Shepherd (Aussie) is a medium sized, high energy, super intelligent dog. Males generally weigh 50 to 65 lbs. while females are 35 to 50 lbs. They come in a variety of colors, ranging from merle, blue merle, black, red, red merle and tricolor. Their coat is medium length with a dense undercoat and a soft, weather resistant top-coat that protects them from rain, snow and dirt.

Despite the name, the Australian shepherd did not originate in Australia. The breed began in California and other Western U.S. states by American ranchers who were looking to breed a loyal, high-energy dog that was intelligent and could cover a lot of ground. They took their stock from herding dogs brought here by Basque Shepherds who migrated from Australia in the 1800s and also from British collies and Spanish Pyrenean Shepherds. They began calling them Australian Shepherds because of their association with the Basque Shepherds.

Aussies are still the American cowboy’s choice of a herding dog, but they have also stamped their paw on the American family household. People who love the outdoors and have active lifestyles have embraced the endearing qualities of the Australian shepherd. The breed excels in activities like agility and competitive dog frisbee. They are excellent hikers and tireless companions.

This breed is eager to please and they are fast learners. They are known to be clingy and needing constant companionship. With proper socialization, they will be comfortable in most environments and be a friend to all. But this is a smart, sensitive dog. Early mistreatment can lead to lifelong insecurities and wariness from this breed.
It is important to know that this is a herding dog, who was bred to work. This dog is not happy lounging around like our family golden retriever, or toy poodle. This dog likes a job. He likes to have a purpose. Even if it isn’t herding, he likes activity. Whether it be hiking or training in agility, or even jogging with his person. This is a dog that is happy when he is busy.

So, if you have an active lifestyle and are looking for a partner to share your outdoor activities, then consider an Australian Shepherd as an addition to your family. While this breed may not be for everyone, and it is a dog for a specific type of lifestyle, the Aussie has proven to be an adaptive, amiable pooch, who will try and please anyone that welcomes him into their home.
