The Bald Eagle

 The Bald Eagle

By Terri Estes

The bald eagle is the ultimate symbol of freedom. It has been the national bird of the United States since 1782, when it was placed with outspread wings on the great seal of our country. The bald eagle can be found on coins, paper money, postage stamps and even the presidential seal. The fierce beauty and proud independence of this magnificent bird aptly symbolizes the strength and freedom of America.

Unfortunately, the bald eagle was severely endangered from 1967-1995 due to the wide use of DDT, as well as habitat loss. It was unheard of to spot a bald eagle in the tri-state area until the last five years. And now…. they have returned!

Through conservation efforts, bald eagles have returned to the New York City/Long Island area with resilience. As of 2023, there are over 1,000 bald eagles residing in New York State and at least 24 breeding pairs on Long Island. Since they are great fishermen, it is just a matter of time until they take up residence in our area, but they have been spotted here.

Bald eagles live near lakes, rivers and marshes where they can hunt fish, which is their staple food. Fish comprise of 70 to 90% of their diet. They will, however, also hunt on land and will take squirrels, rabbits and other rodents, as well as turtles and snakes.

I have been fortunate enough to view some of our local eagles and I can tell you, it’s truly breathtaking. These magnificent birds have a wingspan of up to eight feet wide. Juvenile bald eagles are mottled with brown and white feathers. They don’t develop their identifiable white head until approximately five years old. But even as juveniles, they are a sight to see. They are the same size as adults, but they have not developed the adult coloring yet. Bald eagles can live for about 30 years.

In my opinion, it’s only a matter of time until the bald eagle takes up residence in the Rockaway area. We have everything they need. We have nesting areas, marshes, and we have fish! Lots of fish!

So, keep your eye in the sky for our nation’s bird. I know they are coming. This is the perfect location for them to build their nests and flourish. Hopefully, by next year I will be writing an article about our local bald eagles. God bless America, and God bless our bald eagles!
