Beach Opening Ceremony

On Friday, May 23 at 10 a.m., head to Beach 17th and the boardwalk for the official beach opening ceremony with NYC Parks, elected officials and more.

 

Sketch Rockaway at the Bird Sanctuary

On Saturday, May 24 at 10 a.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge visitor center to join sketchRockaway on a journey to sketch the sights around the trails. Bring sketch materials.

 

Fort Tilden and Dunes Hike

On Saturday, May 24 at 2 p.m., head to Building 1 (1 Murray Rd.) at Fort Tilden to join a park ranger on a guided nature walk on trails nestled between dunes and maritime forests and learn about how this site has defended us in the past and how it continues to do so today. Approximately 2 miles on uneven terrain.

 

Aviation Pioneers

On Sunday, May 25 at 2 p.m., head to Hangar B at Floyd Bennett Field to join National Park Ranger Flor for an in depth look at aviation pioneers and the obstacles they overcame in order to make history. Put yourself in their shoes and explore the planes they would have flown.

 

Memorial Day Parade

On Monday, May 26, at 10:30 a.m., there will be a Mass at St. Francis de Sales on Beach 129th Street. After Mass is a ceremony at the Four Chaplain’s monument outside. At around 11:45 a.m., the parade will head to Memorial Circle for a ceremony, and then up to the boardwalk to Beach 95th for the Doughboy memorial service.

 

Mobile Farmers Market

On Thursday, May 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., head to the Addabbo Health Center (6200 Beach Channel Dr.) for a mobile farmer’s market with fresh fruit and vegetables at affordable prices. EBT, WIC accepted.

 

100th Precinct Community Council

On Wednesday, May 28 at 7 p.m., head to the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th St.) for the monthly 100th Precinct Community Council meeting. It will include nominations for board positions.

 

Rockaway YMCA 10 Year Anniversary

On Thursday, May 29 at 6 p.m., head to the Rockaway YMCA to celebrate their 10th anniversary. Tickets include dinner, drinks an entertainment. Local supporters and heroes will be honored. Tickets start at $50. For tickets, see give.ymcanyc.org/RockawayYMCA10

 

RAA’s Exhibit Openings

On Friday, May 30 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., head to Rockaway Artists Alliance’s studio 7 in Fort Tilden for the opening reception for their juried exhibit, “Lean on Me: Everyday Acts of Humanity.” and “Structures: Portals.” The exhibits are open Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. through July 13.

 

Summer Kickoff

On Sunday, June 1 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., head to Beach 116th Street to enjoy music, food, vendors and fun to kick off the summer.

 

Cardio Punch

On Saturdays at 11 a.m. through June 28, head to Beach 60th and the boardwalk for a free class involving punching and kicking combinations.

 

Chair Movement Class

On Monday and Wednesdays at 10 a.m., head to Temple Beth-El (201 Beach 121st Street) for Chair Movement class, stretching and strengthening for your whole body. Donation based.

 

Uplifted Dance Fitness

On Mondays and Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m., head to the Beach 32nd Street Football Field (Beach 32nd and the boardwalk) for a free dance workout class with Miss Dawn.

 

Yoga on the Beach

On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 8:30 a.m., head to Beach 102nd Street to enjoy yoga on the beach with Soupy. For info, call 347-804-2559.
