RAA’s Exhibit

Openings

On Friday, May 30 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., head to Rockaway Artists Alliance’s studio 7 in Fort Tilden for the opening reception for their juried exhibit, “Lean on Me: Everyday Acts of Humanity.” and “Structures: Portals.” The exhibits are open Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. through July 13.

 

Black Birders Celebration

On Saturday, May 31 at 10 a.m., head to Beach 56th Place near the boardwalk entrance to join NYC Plover Project for a bird walk through the Arverne Nature Preserve in celebration of Black Birders Week. Then at 12:30 p.m., head to Garden by the Bay at 480 Beach 43rd Street for nature-based activities and lunch.

 

FBF Kayaking for Beginners

On Sunday, June 1 at 9:30 a.m., head to the Floyd Bennett Field Seaplane Ramp for kayaking for beginners. Open to ages 6 and up with an adult. No reservation required. Dress to get wet, wear shoes that will not fall off, and bring water, sunscreen, and a snack. Kayaks, personal floatation devices, paddles and instruction provided.

 

Shorebird Families

On Sunday, June 1 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., head to Beach 44th Street where NYC Urban Park Rangers will guide you to the best viewing spots to see migratory birds. For all skill levels. Beginners welcome. Learn more about plovers, terns, oystercatchers and other shorebirds that nest on the beach shoreline.

 

Summer Kickoff

On Sunday, June 1 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., head to Beach 116th Street to enjoy music, food, vendors and fun to kick off the summer.

 

Movies Under the Stars: Moana

On Thursday, June 5 at 9 p.m., head to the Beach 94th Amphitheater to watch family-friendly movie Moana. Bring a blanket.

 

Defensive Driving Class

On Wednesdays, June 10 and 17, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., head to the St. Camillus Cottage, adjacent St. Camillus Church (99-15 Rockaway Beach Blvd., Rockaway Park) for a 6-Hour Defensive Driving Course. You can get a three-year 10% liability insurance discount and up to 4 points off your license! Must attend both nights. Fee: $45. To register call Don at 917-553-2408.

 

Cardio Punch

On Saturdays at 11 a.m. through June 28, head to Beach 60th and the boardwalk for a free class involving punching and kicking combinations.

 

Hangar B Tour

On Sundays at 2 p.m., head to Hangar B in Floyd Bennett Field to join a park ranger for a guided tour.

 

Chair Movement Class

On Monday and Wednesdays at 10 a.m., head to Temple Beth-El (201 Beach 121st Street) for Chair Movement class, stretching and strengthening for your whole body. Donation based.

 

MasterFitness Complete

On Mondays at 11 a.m., head to RISE (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) to join Ann Fosteris for a free exercise class.

 

Core on the Floor

On Mondays at 11:45 p.m., head to RISE (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) to join Ann Fosteris for a 30-minute class that focuses on core and lower body.

 

Uplifted Dance Fitness

On Mondays and Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m., head to the Beach 32nd Street Football Field (Beach 32nd and the boardwalk) for a free dance workout class with Miss Dawn.

 

Yoga on the Beach

On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 8:30 a.m., head to Beach 102nd Street to enjoy yoga on the beach with Soupy. For info, call 347-804-2559

 

Rockaway Irish Festival

On June 7 and 8 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. is the Rockaway Irish Festival at St. Camillus’ lot (Beach 100th and Shore Front).  Enjoy 2 full days of music, vendors, food, drinks, kids’ activities and more.
