Shakespeare: Romeo & Juliet

From Thursday, August 21 through Sunday, August 24 at 6:30 p.m., head to the Beach 94th Amphitheater for a live performance of Romeo and Juliet, presented by Shakespeare on the Rocks. Bring a beach chair. All performances are free.

 

Rockaway Film Festival

From Thursday, August 21 through Sunday, August 24, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., enjoy the 8th Annual Rockaway Film Festival! All films take place at the indoor (415 Beach 72nd Street) and outdoor (72-02 Gouverneur Ave.) Arverne Cinemas. Tickets required for each feature (free-$10). Rockaway Cove Paddle

On Friday, August 22 at 1 p.m., head to Riis Landing by the Marine Parkway Bridge for a kayaking trip along the cove toward Rockaway Point. Dress to get wet, wear shoes that will not fall off, and bring water, sunscreen, and a snack. Kayaks, personal floatation devices, paddles and instruction will be provided. Jamaica Bay Book Club

On Friday, August 22 at 2 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge for book club! Read selections of nature-themed literature, and together think critically about nature literature. This is an outlet for open and respectful discussion. Email jdgreen@nps.gov or call the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at 718-318-4340 in advance if interested.

 

Queens Carnival

On Saturday, August 23, head to Bayswater Park (701 Bay 32nd Street) for the start of Queens Carnival, celebrating Caribbean culture. The day begins with a paint and powder jump at the park at 8 a.m. Then at 11 a.m., with the parade opening ceremony, and the parade starting at 11:30 a.m. from Bayswater Park down to Mott Ave, then the boardwalk to Beach 9th to Beach 17th Street where festivities continue at Dredsurfer Grill. Performances, food, vendors, music and more.

 

RAA’s Portal Exhibit

On Saturday, August 23 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., head to the sTudio 7 Gallery in Fort Tilden for the opening reception of the Rockaway Artist Alliance’s latest exhibit in conjunction with 4head’s Portal: Art With Sand In Its Teeth. Enjoy the work in various mediums from 36 artists. Exhibit will be open Saturdays and Sundays, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. through September 21.

 

St. John’s Hosp. Public Hearing

On Monday, August 25 at 9 a.m., head to the Episcopal Health Boardroom (327 Beach 19th Street) to hear updates on updates on the opening of the new Gerard Walsh Ambulatory Pavilion (19-09 Plainview Ave.)

 

Rockaway Refresh at B. 59th

On Monday, August 25 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., head to Beach 59th and the boardwalk for a shoreline cleanup with JBRPC. Sign a waiver prior to joining at www.jbrpc.org/events

 

Birding for Beginners

On Sundays through August 31 at 2 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a ranger to take a nature walk, and learn the basics of bird identification. Bug spray and sunscreen are recommended, binoculars available.

 

Yoga on the Beach

On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 8:30 a.m., head to Beach 102nd Street for yoga on the beach with Soupy. For info, call 347-804-2559.

Uplifted Dance Class

On Mondays and Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m., head to the Beach 32nd Street Football Field (Beach 32nd and the boardwalk) for a free dance workout class with Miss Dawn.

 

Zumba Under the Stars

On Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. on Beach 17th and the boardwalk and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Beach 108th Hockey Rink, join Lisa G for this free high-energy dance workout class through Aug. 28.
