Jamaica Bay Book Club

On Friday, September 5 at 2 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge for book club! Read selections of nature-themed literature, and together think critically about nature literature. The Wonderful World of Pigeons

On Saturday, September 6 at 1 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a park ranger to learn more about pigeons including history and how they wind up in major cities.

 

Catch the Buzz About Bees

On Sunday, September 7 at 10:30 a.m., head to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a Park Ranger to learn all about NY’s native bees and what we can do to help them. This program involves a woodworking demonstration where you’ll learn how to make a bee hotel.

 

Full Harvest Moon Walk

On Sunday, September 7 at 7:30 p.m., head to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a park ranger on a quieter, darker walk through the refuge, and enjoy the opportunity to view the beautiful landscape by the light of the moon. Dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear.

 

Community Board 14

On Tuesday, September 9 at 7 p.m., head to the Bayswater Jewish Center (23-55 Healy Ave.) for the return of the monthly CB14 meeting. Hear updates from OEM on our evacuation plan and more. To speak, sign up for public speaking before the meeting begins.

 

9/11 24th Anniversary Ceremony

On Thursday, September 11 at 8:30 a.m., head to Tribute Park on the bayside of Beach 116th Street, for the annual ceremony to remember those who died on 9/11. Music by Chazmond Peacock and Aerial Acoustics.

 

RAA’s Portal Exhibit

On Saturdays and Sundays, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., head to the sTudio 7 Gallery in Fort Tilden for the Rockaway Artist Alliance’s latest exhibit in conjunction with 4head’s Portal: Art With Sand In Its Teeth. Enjoy the work in various mediums from 36 artists. Open through September 21.

 

Birding for Beginners

On Saturdays through September 27 at 2 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a ranger to take a nature walk, and learn the basics of bird identification. Bug spray and sunscreen are recommended, binoculars available.

 

Yoga on the Beach

On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 8:30 a.m., head to Beach 102nd Street for yoga on the beach with Soupy. For info, call 347-804-2559.

 

Seaside OAC Fitness

Seaside Older Adult Center (320 Beach 94th St.) hosts fitness classes for those 60+ including Aerobics on Mondays at 11 a.m., Strength Exercise/Movement on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:15 a.m., and Tai Chi for arthritis on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. Bring ID.

 

Free Art Classes

On Mondays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., head to 205 Beach 96th Street for free mixed media art classes in conjunction with Ordervision, NYFA and others.

 

Uplifted Dance Class

On Mondays and Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m., head to the Beach 32nd Street Football Field (Beach 32nd and the boardwalk) for a free dance workout class with Miss Dawn.
