Rockaway Beach Civic Association Meeting
On Thursday, October 9 at 7 p.m., head to the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street) for the monthly RBCA meeting. Guest speaker District Attorney Melinda Katz.
8th Annual Raptorama
On Sunday, October 11 at 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., head to the Salt Marsh Nature Center (East 33rd and Avenue U in Brooklyn) to join NYC Parks, NYC Bird Alliance and others to learn all about the birds of prey of Jamaica Bay. See some amazing raptors up close during live demonstrations.
Wine Tasting Fundraiser for RISE
On Saturday, October 11 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., The New York Times Chief Wine Critic, Eric Asimov, will lead a “Natural Wines”-tasting fundraiser at RISE Educational Garden, 190 Beach 44th Street. Purchase $200 tickets in advance at www.riserockaway.org. All proceeds go to support the new one-acre, community-owned and operated RISE Native Plant Nursery, Seed Bank, and Educational Garden.
Arverne East Nature Preserve Shrub Planting
On Monday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., head to the Arverne East Nature Preserve (190 Beach 44th Street) to join the NYC Parks Stewardship Team to restore coastal habitats with a shrub and plug planting! Volunteers should dress in clothes that can get dirty and wear close-toed shoes. Bring water. Space is limited and registration is required. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a chaperone. Community Board 14
On Tuesday, October 14 at 7 p.m., head to the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street) for the monthly CB14 meeting. Presentations on Bayswater Point State Park Restoration, budget requests, environmental, land use and health issues and more. To speak, sign up before the meeting begins.
RRC Meeting & Debate Watch
On Thursday, October 16 at 6:30 p.m., head to the Belle Harbor Yacht Club (533 Beach 126th Street) to join the Rockaway Republican Club for their monthly meeting and a watch party of the first NYC mayoral debate on NBC.
Rockaway Beach Marathon/ Half/ 5K
On Saturday, October 25, Rockaway Track Club hosts its Rockaway Beach Marathon, half marathon and 5K run. Bib and t-shirt pickup and day-of registration at Beach 94th Amphitheater starting at 6:30 a.m. All runs begin 8 a.m. on the boardwalk. See www.rockawaytc.org to register in advance.
Birding for Beginners
On Saturdays through October 25 at 10:30 a.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a ranger to take a nature walk, and learn the basics of bird identification. Binoculars available.
Cardio Punch
On Saturdays at 11 a.m., head to Beach 60th and the boardwalk to join Gloria for Cardio Punch, a total body workout for all levels. Punch, hook, and kick to motivating, high-energy music that progress into heart-pumping combinations.
Sea Chapel
On Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., head to RISE (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) to see work by artist Susannah Ray. The multipanel installation of abstract ocean views was created from Rockaway Beach images from her larger body of work To the Sea, To the Sea, To the Sea.
Free Art Classes
On Mondays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., head to 205 Beach 96th Street to enjoy free mixed media art classes in conjunction with Ordervision, NYFA and others.
Uplifted Dance Class
On Mondays and Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m., head to the Beach 32nd Street Football Field (Beach 32nd and the boardwalk) for a free dance workout class with Miss Dawn.
