Clean Beaches 101

On Thursday, February 5 at 7 p.m., RISE, NYC H2O, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are hosting a virtual workshop on the ecology of Jamaica Bay and its ecological and social value, the impact of marine debris and the various methods for its disposal, and waste reduction bills in the NYS Legislature intended to reduce marine debris and promote sustainable local beaches. Go to riserockaway.org and click on Events to register.

 

Rockaway Beach Civic Association

On Thursday, February 5 at 7 p.m., head to the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th) second floor for the monthly RBCA meeting. Members and newcomers welcome.

 

Birding for Beginners

On Sunday, February 8 at 10:30 a.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a ranger on this birding walk around West Pond. All skill levels welcomed; binoculars provided. Dress for the conditions.

 

Valentine’s Day Mini Market

On Sunday, February 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., head to Locals Collective (190 Beach 69th Street) to shop for Valentine’s Day gifts from local vendors.

 

A Taste of Natural Healing

On Monday, February 9 at 10 a.m., head to RISE (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) as Alexandra G. Taggart, certified instructor of Dragon’s Way Qigong, leads a FREE thirty-minute class. The Four Energy Gates is a practice to awaken the body’s energy flow. Think almost like an acupuncture treatment, but you are the practitioner!

 

Zumba!

On Monday, February 9 at 11 a.m., head to RISE (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) for a free Zumba class led by LaDeidre Smith from Rockaway YMCA. Enjoy an aerobic fitness workout method that involves cardio and Latin-inspired dance.

 

Community Board 14 Meeting

On Tuesday, February 10 at 7 p.m., head to the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street) for the monthly CB14 meeting. Discussions on Real Edgemere CLT, development at 18-11 Cornaga Ave. To speak, sign up before the meeting begins.

 

Town Hall With the New CO of the 100th Precinct

On Wednesday, February 11 at 7 p.m., head to P.S. 114 (400 Beach 135th Street) to join the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association and other civics for a town hall with Captain Sachi Singh, the new commanding officer of the 100th Precinct.

 

Body Weight Circuit Training

On Tuesdays at 7 p.m., head to the Sorrentino Recreation Center (18-48 Cornaga Ave.) for a free body weight circuit training class with Edith. Membership not required. Ongoing through May.

 

Rockaway Game Club

On Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., head to Bungalow Bar (377 Beach 92nd Street) to join Rockaway Game Club for a night of games! $10 for first-timers, $5 for return adventurers. All ages welcome. Stop by anytime. Follow @rockawaygameclub for more!

 

Cardio Punch

On Saturdays at 11 a.m., head the Far Rockaway Library (1637 Central Ave.) to join Gloria for Cardio Punch, a total body workout for all levels. Punch to the rhythms of motivating music. Through April.

 

V-Day 5K & Half Marathon

On Saturday, February 14, Rockaway Track Club hosts its Valentine’s Day 5K and half marathon runs. For bib pickup, check in and day-of registration, head to Healy’s Pub (108-07 Rockaway Beach Dr.) at 8 a.m. The runs begin on the Beach 108th boardwalk at 9 a.m.
