Meeting

On Thursday, May 7 at 7 p.m., head to the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street) for the monthly RBCA meeting, featuring guest speaker Elizabeth Walsack of NYC Parks, and others.

 

Birding Big Day Walk

On Saturday, May 9 at 9:30 a.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join for Global Big Day for birding, a great way to not only see as many birds as possible, but to join a worldwide community of participants! Bug spray and sunscreen recommended, binoculars available.

 

Community Dune

Planting

On Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., head to Beach 44th and the boardwalk to join RISE for a shoreline cleanup and dune planting. Students may receive community service hours. Register at: www.riserockaway.org/rise/events/

 

North Channel Bridge Cleanup

On Saturday, May 9 at 10 a.m., head to the red brick pavilion at the North Channel Bridge between Broad Channel and Howard Beach to join the National Park Service and Sadhana for beach cleanup series, Project Prithvi! Gloves, garbage bags, and pickers provided.

 

Rockaway Community Park Steward Training

On Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., head to Rockaway Community Park on Edgemere Park Rd. to join for Super Steward: pathkeeper training, to learn how to help with the upkeep of the park. Volunteers must fill out a waiver. For info, see: www.jbrpc.org/events

 

BCVFD Open House & Membership Drive

On Saturday, May 9 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., stop by the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department (15 Noel Road) to learn about how to become a volunteer with free training provided. Adults and youth 13-17 welcome to join!

 

Pollinator Festival

On Saturday, May 9 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., head to Beach 43rd Street Park (591 Beach 43rd Street) to join JBRPC, Garden by the Bay and Edgemere Alliance for a pollinator festival. Learn about bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects. Then help plant some pollinator-friendly plants, decorate terracotta pots, make seed bombs and take home plant seeds and a pollinator-friendly plant.

 

QueensLink Town Hall

On Saturday, May 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., head to Far Rockaway Library  (16-37 Central Ave.) to join for a discussion about improving transportation for Rockaway with QueensLink.

 

Mother’s Day Foraging

On Sunday, May 10 at 10 a.m., head to RISE (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) to join go-to guy for foraging, “Wildman” Steve Brill, to explore Arverne East Nature Preserve. Register at www.riserockaway.org/rise/events/

On Tuesday, May 12 at 7 p.m., head to the Bayswater Jewish Center (23-55 Healy Ave.)  for the monthly community board meeting. Hear transportation and housing committee updates and more. For public speaking, sign up before the meeting begins to speak.

 

A Taste of Natural Healing

On Monday, May 11 at 10 a.m., head to RISE (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) as Alexandra G. Taggart, certified instructor of Dragon’s Way Qigong, leads a FREE thirty-minute class. The Four Energy Gates is a practice to awaken the body’s energy.

 

Body Weight Circuit Training

On Tuesdays at 7 p.m., head to the Sorrentino Recreation Center (18-48 Cornaga Ave.) for a free body weight circuit training class with Edith. Ongoing through September.

 

Chair Yoga

On Wednesday and Fridays at 3 p.m., head to Seaside Library (116-15 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) for a free chair yoga class with Dana Humphrey. Wear something comfortable.

 

Cardio Punch

On Saturdays at 11 a.m., head the Beach 60th boardwalk to join Gloria for Cardio Punch, a total body workout for all levels. Punch to the rhythms of motivating music. Through September.
