Clattermouuuth’s Music of The Week: ‘Crumbling’ by Mid Air Thief

By By Andrew Kohler
Welcome back to Clattermouuuth’s Music of the Week, curating Rockaway’s music taste one week at a time.
Today, I will be talking about an album that is a bit more popular than my usual recommendations: “Crumbling” by Mid Air Thief, released in 2019, and boy oh boy, you are in for a fun read because I sincerely believe that this has to be my all-time favorite album.
Since discovering it in the fall of last year, I have spent so much time with this album, and it has never gotten old. While I’ve only discovered this album recently, the best word to describe it is nostalgic, it really feels like I’m in a childhood dream when listening. Although fairly popular within the underground music scene, I still feel it’s important that I recommend this album because it feels like every second of this album contains a sound that I didn’t think could ever exist. This album shouldn’t exist at all, and we should all feel privileged to live in the same world that this album lives in.
It’s really hard to speak about one specific song from this album because I feel that each song is so original and perfect. However, the song that I’ve listened to the most is “These Chains” because I feel that it showcases Mid Air Thief’s ability to create sounds from another planet. Another song that does this well is the lead track, “Why,” and I really don’t think I can explain the sounds from this album, so do me a favor and look up the song and skip to 1:23 … Did you do it?
What is that noise? As soon as that sound hit my ears for the first time, I knew this was going to be an album that I’ll be listening to for many years. There truly isn’t enough music like this out there, so I highly recommend you give it a listen. If you did, let me know what you thought at clattermouuuthrec@gmail.com.
