Dear Editor:

 Dear Editor:

I am writing to express my strong opposition to Alma Realty’s proposed development project on the existing Surfside property in Rockaway. As a lifelong resident of Rockaway and a staunch supporter of the Surfside Housing Association for Tenants (SHAFT), I firmly stand against the construction of four additional high-rise towers, each rising up to 24 stories.

The proposed development poses significant concerns for the residents of Rockaway. Firstly, the construction of such massive towers would dramatically alter the character and skyline of our neighborhood, diminishing its charm and sense of identity. Rockaway is known for its unique coastal landscape, and the addition of towering structures would irreversibly detract from its natural beauty.

Furthermore, the proposed development raises serious issues regarding infrastructure and public services. Rockaway is already grappling with overcrowded schools, strained public transportation, and limited access to essential amenities. The influx of residents resulting from Alma Realty’s project would only exacerbate these challenges, placing undue burden on our already stretched resources.

Rockaway is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including rising sea levels and extreme weather events. The construction of high-rise towers on the Surfside property would further endanger our coastal community, increasing the risk of flooding and erosion.

I urge the Department of City Planning to carefully consider the objections raised. We must prioritize the long-term sustainability and well-being of our neighborhood over the short-term interests of developers. I implore you to reject Alma Realty’s proposal and instead focus on initiatives that promote responsible growth and preservation of Rockaway’s unique character.
