This past Monday, September 11, and throughout last weekend, all of us on the peninsula honored those we lost on the twenty-second anniversary of the attack on America. It does not get any easier as the years go on, and we remember and will never forget those who were killed that day.

Although it was still a beautiful day of remembrance for Richie Allen, the weather did not cooperate for the morning of the Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic, which was held last Sunday. As usual, the t-shirts the Allen family created this year are special. We have been told that they still have some available for sale for $20. So, if you did not make it down to the competition or the paddle out, and would like to purchase this year’s t-shirt, Gail Allen will be selling them at her house this Saturday, September 16 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.  If you need the address, please text 646-322-5984.

This past Sunday, we saw the opening weekend of the NFL season in full effect. While things were not pretty locally for both the Giants and the Jets, Rockaway’s own, Christian Izien, who the Rockaway Times covered joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of Rutgers earlier this year, had himself a day! Izien made himself known right away as he picked off Kirk Cousins of the Vikings just outside the endzone for the first interception of his career. Congrats, Christian!

The new NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban was in town last Friday, taking a tour of Beach 116th Street with Councilwoman Joann Ariola and several other local civic and police leaders. According to Ariola’s office, there were several productive conversations about how to best utilize police resources to address community concerns. “By having Commissioner Caban down to Rockaway, I am making sure that Beach 116th Street is a priority for the NYPD as well. Our residents should be able to go to the store without being harassed by panhandlers or having to avoid emotionally disturbed individuals. Together, we will get this corridor cleaned up, so that the residents of Rockaway can enjoy the quality of life they deserve,” said Councilwoman Ariola.

Just a friendly reminder, although to some “summer” is over, and many of us are into fall mode, the uptown summer parking rules, however, remain in effect until September 30.
