“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.” – Martin Luther King Jr. Happy MLK Day to everyone!

Well, we have had our first taste of winter weather this past weekend. Although we saw some snowflakes, the storm did not have much of an effect on our area. And with that, the city’s record-setting snowless streak continues hitting 700 days without an inch of snow in five days and will hit two years in a little over a month. There may not have been snow, but it was certainly wet! The city continues to be clobbered with rain! On a bright note, there are only 137 days until Memorial Day weekend!

The rain and wind were so formidable this past week that on Tuesday the city decided to move the migrants that it was housing at Floyd Bennett Field to James Madison High School in Brooklyn before the storm hit. This caused Madison High School to go remote for the day with the plan being for students to return to class Thursday. Confidence in the tent housing structures does not appear to be at an all-time high, especially after some concerning reports after the last storm passed through the area in December.

If you haven’t said goodbye to the holidays just yet, you may want to at least take down your tree. The designated dates for the Department of Sanitation to pick up “naked” Christmas trees and wreaths — no lights, ornaments and tinsel — ends this Saturday, January 13.

Opening up beaches on Manhattan was one thing, but this is starting to get ridiculous… Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul have recently announced a new plan to have floating swimming pools in some of New York’s larger bodies of water to provide more access to public pools. These new pools, touted as first-of-their-kind, would be “a water-filtering, floating, portable pool that will offer New Yorkers a new space to swim in the waters surrounding New York City.” The pools are set to be tested this summer and if all goes to plan, they will be open to the public next year.
