NPS Finds a Temporary Solution for Aviator

Aviator Sports is here to stay! Well, at least, the outdoor portions and its ice programs.

Last Thursday, the Aviator Hockey Club and the Ice Dance Academy announced that they’ve found a way to move forward after Aviator Sports in Brooklyn ceased operations on April 14. In the wake of this news, The Rockaway Times reached out to the National Park Service (NPS) for an update on the latest.

NPS said that it had offered Aviator Sports and Events Center another contract extension until April 14, 2026, and that Aviator accepted the contract to operate the outdoor facilities only. This includes the sports fields, Green Meadows Farm, and golf, so those programs will continue.

As for the inside components, NPS worked on a temporary solution for those who utilize the ice rink. NPS said they have “signed an agreement with Chris Werstine, a member of the local hockey community, to operate the interior facilities specific to the hockey and figure skating programs, which will resume on Monday, April 28. Other programs within the facility have been suspended and the facility will be closed to general public access.”

And the search for a more permanent solution for all continues. “The NPS will re-issue a Request for Proposals in the coming weeks in the effort to find a permanent new operator for the facility.”
