Rockaway Girls Take Home CHSAA Awards

Two Rockaway girls took home Catholic High School Athletic Association honors this weekend. Congratulations to Caitlin Mullen on being awarded the Marianne Noonan Sportsmanship Award and CHSAA Tier 1 – 3rd Team All League Award and to Alex Carbonaro on winning the Tier 1 – 2nd Team All League Award.

Both Mullen, who plays basketball for Archbishop Molloy, and Carbonaro, who plays for Xaverian, were given the honors on Sunday, February 25. As Mullen’s father, Jim Mullen, explains, “Those awards are nice because the opposing coaches from Xaverian and Molloy nominated worthy opponents.”

In addition to the various All League Awards, Mullen earned the Marianne Noonan Sportsmanship Award. Coincidentally, the late Marianne Noonan was a Rockaway resident. As a player for St. John’s, Noonan not only earned her place as a top rebounder and set records, she also went above and beyond to support her team as a whole. Unfortunately, Noonan was killed in a car accident in 1980. An award is now given in her name for sportsmanship.
