Rockaway Loses Its Outdoor Farmers Market

By Juvie Anne Alfeche, RISE Public Programs Coordinator

The peninsula is losing its only outdoor farmers market because of funding cuts. Rockaway Market Street @ Beach 60th was a place where neighbors gathered, where local entrepreneurs launched their small ventures, and where the simple act of shopping became an opportunity to connect, celebrate, and build community.

The market, which was sponsored by RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity), ran its operations during the summer and fall seasons, from 2022 until 2024, and employed up to twenty high school and college students to help run and manage it. It revitalized a previously neglected and underutilized area near the A-train’s Beach 60th Street station, by serving as a destination for residents and DFDs (down for the day).

The market’s closure is a significant loss for the community, as it provided access to just-harvested produce, in a neighborhood where such options are limited. Each Saturday, people had the chance to buy fruits and vegetables, homemade goods, and artisanal products—supporting both their health and mom-and-pop businesses.

Beyond commerce, the market hosted live musicians, free workshops, and fun holiday events. It was a place where folks from all walks of life came together in a shared space.

RISE extends heartfelt gratitude to the vendors, community members, and staff. Their dedication, support, and enthusiasm built something truly special.
