RTC End of Summer Runs

 RTC End of Summer Runs

Rockaway Track Club’s marathon and half marathon on Saturday, August 26, were a huge success! Race start time was 7:30 a.m. and the rain was coming down hard. A little water from above did nothing to deter spirits of the dedicated runners and spectators alike. The great canopy cover of the new 94th Street Amphitheater kept everyone reasonably dry until the sun burst out midway through the race. At the same time, everyone was treated to seeing a tremendous pod of dolphins as they made their way east about 150 feet off the shoreline.

The 5k, won by Jack Curley in a time of 19:14, had more than 50 runners. The half marathon, won by Gillian Faulkner in 79 minutes 41 seconds, had more than 180 runners. Local consistent competitors in the half marathon included Devin Rocks (2nd Overall) and Patrick Killgallen (5th Overall) and the AMAZING Steve Gifford with yet another tremendous effort. The full marathon, with more than 60 runners, was won by Jimmy Mei in 3 hours 22 minutes.

RTC fully appreciates the efforts of its volunteers who make these events possible. These include Timmy Murphy, Russel Hauk, Jackie McGinty, Bill Lent, Jim Mulligan, Kathleen and TJ Moriarty, Gabrielle Sookanon and Val the Trini, Tim and Grace, Thomas, Erin and Kara Molloy and Priscilla Sullivan.

Special thanks to Eric Peterson and the Rockaway Beach Parks Department Crews for the consistent support and cooperation.
