Some Campaign Advice
Dear Editor:
Dear Mr. Sullivan, I saw your full-page ad in the last two Rockaway Times, and I advise you to get a new political adviser.
Most American voters will not be influenced by the comparison of yourself and Ms. Amato’s backgrounds.
Most Americans vote for a candidate for several reasons beside belonging to the same party as themselves.
First, they vote on looks, which is why most candidates have an adviser telling them what clothes to wear and how to smile so they don’t look like a used car salesperson seeing a fish walk onto their car lot.
Secondly, most voters care about what you say, stand for, how you act and want to accomplish.
We don’t really care what your family has done, except in rare circumstances.
As for a candidate’s background, it has some weight. People with a military background play well with voters. But we have many without it. Woodrow Wilson was an educator and before being elected governor and then president. Ronald Reagan was an actor before he became governor and then president. Our last president was a TV show host and not very successful businessman (he had six hotels and casinos go bankrupt, a failed beverage company, a failed board game, a failed magazine, a company that sold steaks, a vodka and an airline that also failed). Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato has represented us since 2017. Something your ad has left out.
The question voters ask themselves is, has the person currently holding that office done a good job for us? And can you do better? That is what all voters really care about. Everything else is BS, to put it bluntly.
