The Four Toed Hedgehog

By Terri Estes
The four toed hedgehog, also known as the African pygmy hedgehog, has become a very popular pet lately. They are small and cute and are relatively low maintenance.
This little hedgehog is the smallest type of hedgehog in the world, measuring between six and nine inches long and weighing around one pound. Their color is usually a variation of light grey or silver to a darker grey.
Their bodies are covered with sharp quills, and their faces, legs and bellies are covered with coarse hair. When frightened or threatened, the hedgehog will roll up into a tiny spiny ball with its quills sticking out in all directions.
The hedgehog’s diet in the wild consists mainly of worms, slugs and other creepy-crawly things such as caterpillars, centipedes and earwigs. In captivity, they do well on high protein, grain free poultry cat food, and commercially made hedgehog food. They are nocturnal and sleep all day and eat at night.
These are solitary creatures, but it is possible for them to bond with humans. It takes time and patience and calm and gentle handling. While their quills are spiky, they generally don’t pierce human skin. Spending time with them and getting them used to your presence is also key to gaining their trust.
