Bringing Music to Rockaway

 Bringing Music to Rockaway

By Katie McFadden

Hitomi Makotinsky is trying to spread the gift of music knowledge around Rockaway. On Saturday, June 14, her students showed off the fruits of their labor at a piano recital at Peninsula Library, for the public to see what they’ve learned.

For Makotinsky, music knowledge is invaluable in an ever-changing society where it seems to have taken a back seat. “I grew up in Japan, where piano studios are everywhere. As a child, I would hear music on every street as local kids practiced daily. It created a vibrant, creative environment that I will never forget,” Makotinsky said. “Here in America, when schools face financial challenges, one of the first things they often cut is music and art programs. It’s heartbreaking to know that some children may never experience the beauty of music and the arts.”

That’s why she took it upon herself to start teaching piano. “Through my work, I hope to support this community and help make Rockaway known not only for its beautiful beaches, but also as a place where music fills the streets — where you can hear the sound of piano playing in every corner of the neighborhood.”

She chose Peninsula Library as the site for her students’ recital rather than a concert hall, so the public could freely stop by and enjoy the performance. “It was a chance to celebrate young local talent in an accessible and welcoming setting,” she said. About 10 of her students performed.
