Buried Treasure
Dear Editor:
Buried treasure. We all heard that one now, didn’t we? Well actually, there’s a buried treasure in Rockaway. Oh yeah, but it’s visible to only a few. It’s a senior center located in the church on Beach 94th Street in the catering hall. Catholic Charities Seaside Older Adults Center. It has been there for a few years, but very few people know about it. Even people right around the corner, on Beach 91st and 92nd Street, don’t know it exists.
In this day and age, there’s a great need for such a place. It’s a must for seniors with nothing to do and all day to do it. The day starts out with a complete breakfast starting at 8:30 a.m. From eleven o’clock to twelve there’s an exercise class, where many participate, to keep the old body in shape. At 12 noon, there is lunch served, catered by Russo’s on the Bay in Howard Beach, for only one dollar, and if you bring a container with you, you can get a dinner to take home for one dollar.
There are so many different programs there: bingo, knitting, painting, arts and crafts, Tai Chi, pool table, ping pong, dominos and cards. Come on down and start enjoying your old age. You will surely be happy you went there to check it out. There’s something for everyone.
A new book was recently published entitled “Eat Your Ice Cream.” The author researched the primary contributors to longevity. He concluded that friendship and social activities are even more essential than diet and exercise. You have all that and more at the Seaside Older Adult Center and 320 Beach 94th Street in Rockaway Beach. If you wish to call and speak to the Manager, Briege McGarrity, her telephone number is 347-926-4119.
