Driver Damages Several Vehicles in Diabetic Episode

What looked like a scene out of Grand Theft Auto unfolded in Rockaway Beach on Wednesday morning, shocking and frightening bystanders. On Wednesday, April 15, just before 10 a.m., a driver of a black Suburban crashed into several vehicles on Beach 90th Street before reversing and continuing course on to Rockaway Beach Boulevard, hitting a garbage can and a pickup truck and even slamming into two police cars in front of the 100th Precinct and almost hitting a female officer. The driver then swerved on to Beach 94th Street before ultimately crashing into another police vehicle, where he was met by police with guns drawn.

However, police quickly determined that the man was suffering from a medical emergency and was transported to a hospital by ambulance. According to the 100th Precinct, the man had suffered from a diabetic episode due to severely low blood sugar. Low blood sugar can cause cognitive impairment, dizziness, and loss of consciousness. No arrests were made. Those whose cars were hit said the driver’s car insurance company has since reached out to them to cover the damages.
