Gutters
By Robin Shapiro
A recent newspaper article about the importance of maintaining gutters led me to do a little research. According to a reputable major home improvement outfit, defective gutters can allow water damage to a roof, foundation, basement, etc. Water can accumulate under the roofing, damage shingles and leak into the home which can allow mold growth.
Specifically, trapped water can freeze which can result in leaks when it melts. Further, a clogged gutter can cause it to separate from the roof which can create gaps. This may allow water to reach the foundation leading to cracks, damaged floors and walls, warped doors and window frames, crawlspace and/or basement moisture which can lead to the aforementioned mold creation.
It is recommended that gutters be cleaned twice a year – springtime and fall. Also, it’s a good idea to check gutters after heavy rain. Some people use a ladder and work gloves to maintain their own gutters. A leaf blower and/or a garden hose can help. Gutters can last up to 20 years or more if properly maintained. Some people hire gutter maintenance and repair services. Call me. Love, Robin
