Just after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, a two-alarm fire broke out at Dayton Towers building 8000 Shore Front Parkway.

The fire seemed to stem from apartment 2K on the second floor of the high rise building. As FDNY responded, they found the resident in the lobby of the building. The victim was transported to a hospital with moderate injuries but is expected to be okay.

More than 100 firefighters from 25 units responded to try to put out the flames. Smoke was so strong that it reached and filled apartments as high up as the 12th floor of the building. A firefighter went down for a brief moment and a mayday was called. At least three firefighters were evaluated for injuries. By 10:30 a.m., the fire was under control. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

Meanwhile, Rockaway is already stepping up to try to offer help to the victim, who remains unknown as we go to press. On local social media page, Rockaway Businesses Need You, computer specialist Scott Ruscillo offered to retrieve data from any of the victim’s computers. Others responded by offering things like clothing, air conditioning units, fire restoration services and more.
