Birdwatching with a Ranger

On Saturday, May 25 at 10:30 a.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join Ranger Flor for a bird walk to the new living shoreline of West Pond Trail. Binoculars are provided.

 

Living Fossils Photo Exhibit

On Saturday, May 25 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.,  head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge for an opening reception for Living Fossils: The Atlantic Horseshoe Crab, a photography exhibition by Bianca Otero. Exhibit remains open until mid-July.

Horseshoe Crabs

On Sunday, May 26, at 10 a.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join naturalist Don Riepe for a little preview of the upcoming annual horseshoe crab festivities by learning about horseshoe crabs, shorebirds and the natural spaces these animals call home in Jamaica Bay. Memorial Day Services

On Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m., the American Legion is holding a memorial Mass at St. Francis de Sales in Beach 129th Street. This will be followed by a ceremony at the Four Chaplain’s monument outside of the church. The Memorial Day parade will commence some time after 11 a.m., down Rockaway Beach Blvd. to Beach 121st for a wreath laying ceremony at Memorial Circle. It then continues up to the boardwalk on Beach 120th and down to Beach 95th Street for a final ceremony at the Doughboy monument.

 

The People’s Money

On Tuesday, May 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., head to RISE (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) to join FRANC (Far Rockaway Arverne Nonprofit Coalition) for Phase 3 of the People’s Money, New York City’s annual citywide Participatory Budgeting initiative where community members decide how to spend part of the city’s budget. This democratic process is open to all New Yorkers, ages 11 and up, regardless of immigration status. Vote for projects that you deem important, enjoy light refreshments, and have a chance to win a $50 gift card! RSVP at www.riserockaway.org/rise/events .

 

100th Precinct Community Council

On Wednesday, May 29 at 7 p.m., head to the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th St.) for the monthly meeting with the NYPD’s 100th Precinct. Voice your concerns, hear updates and more.

 

Cardio Punch

On Saturdays at 11 a.m., head to Beach 60th and the boardwalk to join Gloria for this total-body, non-contact workout for all fitness levels.

 

Crochet Club

for Kids

On Fridays at 4 p.m., kids ages 6-11 are welcome at Peninsula Library (92-25 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) to learn the basics of crocheting. Must call 718-634-1110 to reserve a space.

 

Yoga with Soupy

On Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:30 a.m., head to Beach 102nd Street for a yoga class led by Soupy Campbell.

 

Senior Exercise Classes

Head to Seaside Older Adult Center (320 Beach 94th Street) for exercise classes for those 60+. New members welcome. Bring ID. Aerobics on Mondays with Anna at 11 a.m. Walking with Ease with Gerard on Tuesdays at 12:45 p.m. Strength Exercise with Tommy on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. Tai Chi for Arthritis with Joe on Wednesdays at 11 a.m.
