A Lesson on Native Plant Gardens

A Lesson on Native Plant Gardens

On Monday, April 15, the Shore Garden Club, at its monthly meeting at Harbor Light, hosted Sue Avery, an authority and advocate for native plant gardens. She discussed why we should add some native plants to our gardens to make them welcoming to pollinators.

Many factors, such as habitat loss, pesticides, climate change and invasive species have led to drastic decline in pollinators. Without the bees, butterflies, wasps, ants, flies, moths and beetles we would face a collapse of the food supply.

She encouraged the members to promote biodiversity by including some native plants in their gardens. Among her suggestions were: bee balm (Monarda) asters, milkweed (Asclepius) and cone flower (Echinacea). For more information, visit the Long Island Native Plant Initiative website LINPI.ORG
