Another Sudden Stop

 Another Sudden Stop

Last March, the NYC Department of Transportation added new stop signs to Rockaway Beach Blvd. at Beach 117th Street, without much warning. Now those driving on Newport Avenue were caught off guard as, on the morning of Thursday, January 9, new stop signs were placed on Newport and Beach 135th Street, for both east and westbound traffic.

According to the DOT, they “received public input about the need for stop signs at this location.” After conducting a study, the DOT determined that stop signs were needed in the area.

The DOT did not provide much more information, but there are two schools on Beach 135th Street, P.S. 114 and P.S. 256Q, making Newport Avenue and Beach 135th Street a busy crossing area when schools are in session. In 2019, speed cameras were placed on Newport Avenue around Beach 133rd Street.
