CATS
By Terri Estes
This week we are diving into the wonderful world of cats! There are many different breeds of cats. The International Cat Association (TICA) currently recognizes 71 breeds of cats, but there are many more breeds of cats that are not officially recognized by this organization or other cat associations. The typical household cat is not a specific breed, but rather a domestic short-haired or domestic long-haired cat. These cats are not recognized as a specific breed of cat, but may have many characteristics of different breeds, or no specific breed at all. Domestic short-haired and long-haired cats can have a variety of coat colors and patterns, and they can be found in households all over the world. These cats make great pets as they tend to be affectionate, adaptable and easy to care for.
Cats, like humans, have unique personalities, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer to what a typical cat’s personality is. However, there are some general traits that many cats share including independence, intelligence and curiosity. Cats are known for their independent nature and often prefer to do things on their terms. They are very intelligent animals. They can be trained to do tricks and follow commands, but usually choose to ignore these commands. That is beneath them – ask the dog to go fetch!
Cats are also known for their curious nature and love to explore their surroundings. They enjoy playing with toys and can be very active, but also enjoy lounging and sleeping for long periods. In terms of social behavior, cats are typically solitary animals. However, cats enjoy human company and can form strong bonds with their owners. They also form bonds with other cats too. In the wild, however, cats are solitary hunters and do not typically live in groups. Through domestication, cats have learned to live with each other and form strong friendships with one another. It is important to note that some cats have very strong personalities and will not get along with other felines.
Some people allow their cats to roam freely, and some always keep their cats indoors. Allowing cats to roam freely can have both positive and negative consequences. On the one hand, outdoor cats are free to explore and exercise their natural hunting instincts. While on the other hand, they are exposed to risks such as being hit by cars, attacked by other animals, getting lost and contracting diseases. If you have a pet cat, it’s important to consider the risks and benefits of letting them roam freely and take appropriate measures to ensure their safety and well-being. Some options to consider include building a secure outdoor enclosure or, for indoor cats, providing them with plenty of toys and activities to keep them stimulated.
Having a pet cat can be a wonderful experience. Cats are affectionate, playful and can provide their owners with companionship and comfort. They are a great source of entertainment and can also have a calming presence in the household. Building a strong bond with your cat can be a rewarding experience that brings joy and love into your life. There are several pet adoption organizations in the Rockaway area that have an abundance of cats and kittens looking for homes. If you are ready for a feline companion, contact one of these local organizations, and provide a local cat or kitten a much-needed home!
