On Wednesday, August 28, a driver stole a vehicle from the Rockaway Park Stop and Shop lot, went on a joyride and led police on a chase through Breezy Point, where he ultimately crashed the vehicle into a brick fence outside of a home. By the next day, the suspect, Isaiah Spence, was released from custody without bail.
Last Wednesday, police responded to a 911 call for a stolen vehicle at 112-15 Beach Channel Drive. Police attempted to conduct a lawful car stop of the 2017 Kia Sorrento and the vehicle fled. The driver led them into the private community of Breezy Point, before turning down Utica Walk, nearly missing a few children, driving on to the sidewalk, and knocking down fences of several homes, before coming to a stop at a brick wall at 11 Utica Walk. The driver then attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended and arrested.
According to an NYPD spokesperson, the suspect was identified as 21-year-old Isaiah Spence who provided an address on Willmohr Street in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. According to court records, Spence was hit with several charges including a D felony grand larceny 3rd degree, an E felony of fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle 2nd degree, a D felony criminal possession of property valued at over $3,000, an E felony grand larceny auto in the 4th degree, a misdemeanor reckless endangerment 2nd degree, a misdemeanor reckless driving charge, a misdemeanor unauthorized use of vehicle without owner consent, a charge for operating a vehicle without a license and a charge for leaving the scene where property damage occurred.
Spence had his first appearance in Queens Criminal Court at 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 29. Spence pled not guilty to all charges. A prosecutor requested bail, but Spence was released with no monetary conditions. He’s due back in court on October 29.
