 High Tide

Baby, it’s cold outside! I think everywhere you went last week (if you were brave enough to face the frigid air), everyone was talking about the freezing cold temperatures, the fear of pipes freezing, escaping to the south, etc. But as we are always looking for a brighter side – it’s only 54 days until spring! And it’s only 37 days until Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day! There, don’t you feel better already?

Indoor wave pool in Rockaway? Now that sounds like a pretty good idea! Negotiations for such a venue are reportedly on-going between Local Office Landscape and Urban Design, a Brooklyn design firm founded by Walter Meyer and New York City. As reported by The Gothamist, Meyer, along with Lou Harris, founder of Black Surfing Rockaway, are currently in negotiations with the city for a specific property in Far Rockaway but have not announced the exact location. The project is estimated to cost around $30 million dollars.

Councilwoman Joann Ariola has announced that she will be continuing her partnership with Rockaway’s Community Boathouse. That partnership helps ensure that high-quality, free programming remains in place on the peninsula. “There’s truly something serene about being out on the water and exploring our area in a way that only kayaks or stand-up paddleboards would allow. I look forward to a continued partnership with the Community Boathouse both in the coming fiscal year, and for many years to come,” said Councilwoman Joann Ariola. The Community Boathouse is currently operating out of the Vernam Barbadoes Preserve (Amstel Blvd., Far Rockaway, NY 11692) and Riis Landing (Rockaway Point Blvd., Queens, NY 11697). Visit communityboathouse.org for more information.

Manhattan has a lot of tall buildings. Just look out over the bay and see for yourself. In fact, New York City has eight of the top ten tallest buildings in the United States, including the tallest: The Freedom Tower. Well, plans are currently underway to dethrone New York and build an even bigger skyscraper in an unusual location. Developers in Oklahoma City are planning to build a new building that would be 1,907 feet tall, making it the tallest building in the U.S. and the fifth tallest building in the world. There’s nothing wrong with tall buildings but it might look a little funny with the next tallest building being 844 feet and every other building 500 feet or less. You know what they say, “Oklahoma City, the city so nice they named it twice!”
