On Friday, August 30, District 32 Councilwoman Joann Ariola invited the community to participate in a beach cleanup around Beach 108th Street, led by Archie and Dale, the D32 Clean-up Crew! About 30 people, including many children arrived ready to work, while Ariola’s office provided garbage bags, gloves and some garbage pickup tools for volunteers to use. They then dispersed, taking on Beach 108th and surrounding beaches in search of trash, picking up balloons, soda cans, straws and more.
Ariola was most impressed with the kids’ eagerness to help. “I loved it that it was really the children that wanted to do this beach cleanup and reached out to our office and their parents were so happy because they really want to show by example what it is to take care of your community, the environment, the beaches, and that you have a responsibility to clean up after yourself,” Ariola said.
As the cleanup ended and the kids returned to show off their full garbage bags, one child exclaimed, “Can we go back and do it again?”
