St. Camillus / St. Virgilius MVPs of the Week

By Bill Swensen
The St. Camillus/St. Virgilius basketball program is underway with 150 local kids from 4th grade to 8th grade, playing in the Girls and Boys leagues. Here are some standout players this week.
Anne McDonagh
Girls League
Anne is a player who will do everything the team needs to win. She fights under the boards on both ends of the court and plays tenacious defense. She’s an unselfish player who gets all of her teammates involved, and when her team needs her to score, she comes through. In this game, she dominated inside and from mid-range. Her 15 points were critical in leading her team to a nine-point victory.
Brendan Graves
Junior Boys League
Brendan was a scoring machine in this game. The lead in this game was going back and forth and Brendan was single-handedly keeping the Green team close. His floaters and mid-range jumpers were deadly. He’s one of those rare players nowadays who can dominate a game from inside the three-point arc. His 21 points were just enough to secure his team an exciting two-point win.
David Ahlemeyer
Senior Boys League
David was on fire this week. He was knocking down threes from everywhere. It seemed like every time the Yellow team came down the court, bang, David nailed another three. He made an amazing seven threes in this game, and it was even more fun watching him celebrate each one with his own unique style. His 24 points kept his team close, but it wasn’t quite enough to beat the first-place Black team.
Paddy Palisi
Senior Boys League
Paddy is clearly one of the best players in the league. He dominates every part of the game. He can do it all. Rips down rebounds, blocks shots, has the slick moves it takes to score from inside the paint, and he has one of the deadliest 3-point shots in the league. He did his thing again this week, scoring 23 points and leading his team to a hard fought four-point win.
James Moriarty
Senior Boys League
If you want to see a player who’s tough and smooth at the same time, just take a look at James. He can win a fight for a rebound against anyone, and he can muscle his way to the basket when he has to. But he also has these smooth moves he uses to score at will from just about anywhere. The game was tied after three quarters. That’s when James took over. His 22 points, including three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, allowed his Blue team to pull away and get a hard-fought win.
Luke Costin
Senior Boys League
Luke is a real team player. He knows when to make the right pass and he knows when his team needs him to score. They needed him to score in this game and he really came through. He was hitting from everywhere. Lay-ups, mid-range, and especially from behind the arc. He knocked down an impressive five 3-pointers. His 27 points led his Red team to another well-deserved victory.
