The Maine Coon

 The Maine Coon

Maine Coon cats are the gentle giants of the domestic cat world. This is one of the largest cat breeds in the world. While an adult house cat weighs on average eight to 12 lbs., a Maine Coon weighs in at 10 to 22 lbs. on average. Males are usually larger than females.

Maine Coons have thick, silky, heavy, waterproof coats that come in a variety of colors. They have tufts of hair at the tips of their ears and their tails are long and bushy, so they can wrap it around themselves for extra insulation.

This is a cat that doesn’t act like a cat. They are much more extroverted than other cat breeds and prefer to be where the action is. They truly enjoy being part of the family. This breed is known for its easy going and gentle disposition. They generally get along well with other pets and children. Maine Coon owners will tell you that their cats act more like dogs than cats. They can learn tricks, and many Maine Coons like water and enjoy swimming!

The longest cat on record was a Maine Coon named Stevie who measured 48.5 inches long. That cat was over four feet long! The heaviest Maine Coon on record is a cat in the UK named Luna who weighs in at 34 lbs. Now that is one BIG cat!

I don’t know about you, but I am so intrigued by this cat breed that I would love to give one a home. My family has a much different opinion, so for now, I can only dream. But perhaps you have a place in your family for a Maine Coon cat! I truly hope so!
