Story & Photos

Long time Rockaway Resident, Charlie Kinzie, turned 90 on Sunday, May 5 and celebrated the milestone at the home of his son, Charlie and Diana Kinzie Jr. In attendance were his daughters, Susan and Mary, grandson, Charlie and granddaughter, Ella. A parade of well-wishers came and went throughout the day.
Pictured here, we see the birthday “boy” speaking with fellow baseball prospect Pete “What-Do-You-Need-A-Bag-For” Foti. Foti came through the Dodgers organization when they were still in Brooklyn, and even though the Yankees and Dodgers were bitter rivals then, the two former “future stars” have remained close for 60 years.
Local dignitaries, family and friends enjoyed many laughs and the delicious feast created by chefs Charlie and Diana. It was rumored that the praise of the food was so overwhelming, that Charlie Jr. was seen crying in his garage for some time. Here’s to next year, Chickie!
