Next Monday, April 8, Rockaway will catch a glimpse of a nearly 90% solar eclipse. Parts of northern and western New York will see a total solar eclipse. The last time there was a total eclipse in New York state was in 1925! So, make sure you grab a pair of eclipse glasses, sit back and watch something amazing. The next eclipse visible to the United States is not expected to occur for 20 years!

After a huge success celebrating the life of local hero Timmy Klein last year, it has been announced that TK Country Fest at the Rockaway Hotel will be back for year two! This year’s event will take place on Sunday, April 28 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Make sure to come out and celebrate Timmy’s life and help support a great organization that has done so much good in honor of such a great person. 34-year-old Guy Rivera, the gunman accused of shooting Police Officer Jonathan Diller last week, has been charged with first-degree murder, as well as attempted murder for aiming his gun at a second police officer, the Queens DA’s office has announced. If convicted, Rivera faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. The driver of the car that Rivera was in, Lindy Jones, was also indicted on a criminal possession of a weapon charge for a second gun found in the car.

Groin construction — aka the new rock jetties — has finally been completed! The Army Corps announced that, with the completion of the groin on Beach 52nd Street, all groin work had been completed. The work has now shifted completely to the dune reinforcement and planting, which is currently taking place between Beach 106th and Beach 126th.

Last week as we went to press, we were notified of a dead body that was discovered in Breezy Point. The body has been identified as Colin Marma, 26, of Garrison, NY in Putnam County. Marma had been missing since early February. According to his mother, Marma had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and had been living with the conditions for four years. The police have not revealed anything further about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-­Powers will be hosting a Spring Festival on Sunday, April 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival will take place at Bayswater Park located at 701 Bay 32nd Street in Far Rockaway and will include fresh produce distribution, egg hunt, sensory activities, and bounce houses. Got plans for tonight? Live between Beach 73rd Street to Beach 108th Street? Well, why not head down to the Knights of Columbus at 333 Beach 90th Street (upstairs meeting room) for the Rockaway Beach Civic Association Meeting? The meeting will start tonight, April 4, at 7 p.m. They will be joined by Felicia Johnson, the new District Manager of Community Board 14, which covers the entire peninsula and Broad Channel, as a guest speaker. There will also be updates from local officials and the 100th precinct. 2024 Membership forms will be available for new members and renewals: $20 individual/$30 business.
