 High Tide

We want to express our sincere condolences to the McManus family on the loss of Nan McManus. Nan was so loved in Rockaway and will be truly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marty, Mikey and Annie and all of the McManus family and their entire Jamesons Pub family, during this extremely difficult and very sad time. We, along with all your Rockaway friends and family, are mourning the loss of Nan.

It’s almost time to honor the Dads of the peninsula … Want to surprise Dad and put a nice picture of him in the newspaper for his special day? Send your photo to mail@rockawaytimes.com by Tuesday, June 11 at noon, and we’ll do our best to put it in next week for Father’s Day.

Nothing says summer like the Rockaway Volleyball League! This now iconic league got its season started last Wednesday night and managed to get the games in before the rain came! The piping plovers, nesting in the middle of where the action usually takes place, made it a little more crowded in certain areas. But it sure was great to see everyone out there playing. Take a walk or bike ride to Riis Park beach on Wednesday nights to see some of the action, and while you are there, stop by the concessions.

Richard Ellis, the artist who helped build the life-size blue whale at the American Museum of Natural History, died last week at the age of 86. His work centered on painting marine subjects, including whales, dolphins, sharks, seals, sea lions, fishes, and marine invertebrates. It’s not surprising sea creatures were the focus of his works, having grown up right here on the peninsula in Belle Harbor.
