Sandy Then and Now

 Sandy Then and Now

Eleven years is a lot of time for change. In many respects, the only signs that Hurricane Sandy was here are photos from 2012. Here’s some of those scenes from the weeks after the storm and what they look like today, 11 years later. Once destroyed Beach 94th now boasts a brand-new amphitheater along Shore Front Parkway, which was in full swing with activity this summer. The burned down boulevard around Beach 114th and Beach 115th is fully rebuilt with new businesses, while some of the destroyed stores moved across the street. The Riis Bathhouse is once again fenced in, but this time it’s undergoing a $50 million restoration that will include a hotel and more.

Before photos by the late Laura Deckelman. Now photos by Katie McFadden.
