SFDS CYO Soccer in Full Swing

This past weekend, all the CYO soccer teams were back in action. All 5th graders compete in the Novice division. This division is one of the largest for SFDS with over 60 kids signed up to play. The division has two girl teams and one boys team.

Last year’s Diocesan Champs, SFDS girls 1, were ready to go this past Sunday at St. Luke. The girls played with lots of energy and shared the ball wonderfully. Savannah Conig, Kayla Egan and Brenna Farrell led the way offensively up front with support from Erin Henry and Vienna Calamine. The energizer bunny Maeve O’Donnell was all over the field as usual and was helped by her buddy Mae LaFroscia to stop the opposing rush at midfield. Goals were hard to come by for St. Luke due in large part to Maddie Egan playing a great goal in the net. SFDS got the win 7-1.

SFDS girls 2 also had a stellar weekend as the team went 2-0 with big wins on both Saturday and Sunday against St. Camillus and Blessed Trinity. These wins were a result of an incredible team effort. Newcomer and striker Ava Masullo, along with Mara Brady dominated the offense. While playing midfield, Isabella Maselli and MacKenzie Capek made it easy for the offense to score by placing the ball numerous times at the feet of the offense which led to goals for many including Eva Walsh and Ella Shannon. Susanne Gallagher and Mia Naccarato turned in exceptional performances at goalies.

Friday night, the Novice boys played in a nail biter, right to the end. The game against St. Camillus ended in a tie 1-1. Down 1-0, the team lead by Shane Tubridy, AJ Evangelista and Jack Sommerville on offense had constant shots on the St. Camillus goalie which allowed Jack Henley to sneak in a goal tying the game 1-1 with less than five minutes to play. Strong defense led by Christian Koti and Nick Perrone and an outstanding night in the goal for Billy Hayden made a great game for all to watch. Saturday, the boys picked up the win against SH Bayside winning 6-0. Luke Gannon had a great game scoring two of the team’s goals as did Johnny Leopoldi with his first goal of the season. Players Jimmy Murtagh, Michael Salerno, and Craig McDonald all helped control the ball at midfield which led the team to victory.

All the teams are excited for what the season holds next!
