Suicide Suspected in Discovery of Latest Body in Jamaica Bay

By Katie McFadden

On Friday night, April 12, the headless body of a man was pulled from Jamaica Bay, near the Howard Beach side of the Joseph P. Addabbo Memorial Bridge. It was the fourth body to be found in local waters since November.

On Monday afternoon, the NYPD released the identity of the man. After family was notified, police said it was 46-year-old Lukasz Mikolajewicz of Dumont Avenue in Ozone Park.

The incident is still being investigated. However, investigators found a noose hanging from the bridge about 1,000 feet from where the body was found. They believe that the man became decapitated after hanging himself from the bridge on Friday.

This comes after a body was discovered in Jamaica Bay near Beach 92nd Street on March 29. Further details have not been provided about this incident. Two days prior, the decomposed body of 26-year-old Colin Marma, an upstate man who suffered from bipolar disorder and psychosis and went missing from Manhattan on February 2, was found on the oceanside beach near Reid Avenue in Breezy Point. This came four months after the torso and legs of missing Irish filmmaker Ross McDonnell was found not too far from where it is suspected he went in for a late-night swim in Fort Tilden on November 4.
